Aim of the conferences
is to present, discuss, and analyze topics related to literacy in a constantly changing world. In the 21st century, social, cultural, and technological changes, along with new scientific data, urge researchers and educators from across Europe and beyond to reconsider literacy issues across the spectrum of human learning. The conclusions from this conference will contribute to the improvement of literacy and literacy research.

The 23rd European Conference on Literacy and the 7th Panhellenic Literacy Conference were organized by the Federation of European Literacy Associations (FELA) and the Hellenic Association for Language and Literacy.


Chair
Chair of the LITERACY 2024 was Prof. Efimia Tafa who is Professor Emerita of the University of Crete. She is the current president of the Hellenic Association for Language and Literacy.

Aim of the Conference
was to bring together young researchers, PhD candidates, and postdocs in the early stages of their careers to present their research in the following fields (with no mandatory restrictions):

  • Proteins, Reactions, and Metabolic Engineering (including computational tools)
  • Light-driven Enzymatic Processes

The symposium is organized by young researchers from TU Graz, ETH Zurich, TU Delft, Uni Groningen, University of Milan, and Politecnico di Milano.

Chair of the 4th NextGenBiocat was Mr. Ioannis Pavlidis, who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Crete, specifically in the Department of Chemistry. His main research focus is Enzyme Technology and Applied Biocatalysis.

“Field Trip” in Anopolis, Sfakia

Aim of the Field Trip
During the course “Hazards and Society” at the University of Lincoln, second-year undergraduate students participate in a field trip designed to teach data collection skills and techniques across the full spectrum of geography. Over the years, Crete has been chosen as the destination, specifically small villages in Chania, where students spend a week exploring the different geographies, climates, terrains, and environmental hazard stories in the northern and southern parts of the island.


Organizers
This field trip in Greece is organized by Dr. Kristen Beck who is a Senior Lecturer at the Geography Department of the University of Lincoln, located in Brayford Pool, Lincoln, UK. Her primary research focus is the decoupling of the relationships between the dynamics of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems over time, using high-resolution paleoecological data from multiple proxies. A significant portion of her work focuses on Tasmania, Australia, with more recent projects in the UK and Canada.

Aim of the conference
is to provide an international platform for the European leaders in the field of scientific diving, as well as early-stage researchers and students, to present results from their most recent underwater research. Additionally, the conference serves as a platform for updates and discussions on new technologies, safety issues, and institutional matters.

The conference was organized by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and it was supported by the European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP).

Chairs of the 8th European Conference on Scientific Diving were Mr. Thanos Dailianis and Ms. Maria Salomidi. Ms. Maria Salomidi is a researcher at the Institute of Oceanography (HCMR, Greece) and Mr. Thanos Dailianis is a researcher at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology & Aquaculture, HCMR (Greece).

“Nautilos” meeting for the marine environment

Aim of the Meeting
was the development of a new generation of cost-effective sensors and samplers, the integration of technologies and observation platforms in large-scale demonstrations in European seas, and the significant contribution to the democratization of marine environment monitoring. Special emphasis was placed on the demonstration activities of technologies developed in recent months, using Fisheries and Aquaculture Observation Systems (AdriFOOS), FerryBox Opportunity Platforms, Augmented Observation Systems, the ARGO platform, and a non-invasive animal tagging system for marine species (manta rays and sharks).

The meeting was organized by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).


Chair
Ms. Eva Chatzinikolaou, a researcher at the HCMR – Hellenic Centre for Marine Research in Heraklion, was the reason for the NAUTILOS meeting to take place in Greece. More specifically, Ms. Chatzinikolaou’s main research interests are climate change, ocean acidification, micro-CT tomography, marine biodiversity, and intertidal ecology.

Is to develop an innovative idea for bio-inspired robots capable of performing tasks in response to specific environmental stimuli, thanks to their smart materials. These robots will have the ability to sense environmental elements they detect, morph their shape according to the situation and adapt to the uniqueness of each environment.

The Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC) of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a partner of the Mapworms project. The annual meeting of 2024 was held in Crete under the corporation of Mapworms project and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).

Objective
The aim of the 14th International Conference of the Hellenic Polymer Society (POLYCONF 14) is to communicate the continuous advancement of polymer science research both in Greece and abroad. The conference seeks to promote interaction between basic research and industry to facilitate maximum technological development. The POLYCONF series is a biennial event hosted in various Greek cities and includes numerous lectures, invited talks, oral and poster presentations by academics, researchers, and industrial partners.

The conference was organized by the Hellenic Polymer Society (HELPS), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) under the auspices of the European Polymer Federation (EPF).

Chair of the conference was Prof. Konstantinos D. Karatasos, a Polymer Colloid and Solution Physical Chemist at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His research focuses on the static, dynamic, and thermodynamic properties of polymeric materials, self-organization phenomena in “soft matter” systems, hybrid polymer-inorganic materials, the study of polymeric systems for bio-pharmaceutical applications, and the glass transition in polymers.

ESGLI meeting on Legionella Infections

Aim of the meeting
is to bring together scientists with research interests in Legionella infections, a significant microorganism recognized by the World Health Organization as one of the most impactful waterborne pathogens on public health. This is one of the reasons Legionella has been included in the new European Drinking Water Directive (2020/2184), as it must be monitored in the water systems of priority buildings.

Conference is organized by the members of the ESCMID Study Group for Legionella Infections (ESGLI), and the National Public Health Organization of Greece(NPHO).
Under the auspices of the Hellenic Society for Microbiology (GR-HMS).

ICOPHOS and Phosphonate Chemistry “grew up”

Aim of the Conference
was to bring participants together to discuss, share, and disseminate recent developments in the chemistry of phosphonic and phosphinic salts, thus promoting significant discoveries in science and technology. Additionally, the ICOPHOS community seeks to continue the tradition of the previous three meetings, typically held across Europe, and elevate the conference to the level it deserves.

The Conference is organized by the members of the Crystal Engineering, Growth & Design Laboratory (Department of Chemistry, University of Crete), and it is under the auspices of the University of Crete.

Chair of the conference was Mr. Kostas Demadis, Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Crete, was the reason of hosting the 4th International Conference on Phosphonic Chemistry, ICOPHOS-4, for the first time in Greece. Mr. Demadis’s research focuses on the development of crystals and how inhibition relates to industrial water systems, biological systems, and metal-phosphonic chemistry.
